Guernsey providing teachers for Sark's only school

Guernsey will be providing two teachers and a part-time head teacher for Sark's only school from September, the States has confirmed.

It follows the departure of former head Michelle Brady, who was suspended in March after an investigation was launched, and Chief Pleas confirming she was no longer employed in June.

The Education Committee agreed to provide the staff with Sark covering the costs. Chief Pleas has been contacted for comment.

Head of Operations for Education Sophie Roughsedge said, although there was no formal need to step in, it wanted to ensure pupils across the bailiwick had "the best possible education".

She said: "Following discussions this past term, the Guernsey Education Office received a formal request from the Government of Sark for support from the beginning of the new academic year.

"We have agreed to provide two teachers, including a lead teacher, to support Sark School for the upcoming academic year.

"This has been further strengthened by the appointment of an executive headteacher for the equivalent of one day a week."

The school, which caters for pupils aged three to 13, is the only one in the island.

Roughsedge said staff and students could be "reassured" that it was "working hand-in-hand with Sark's Education Committee and Sark School to put strong foundations in place now, to secure a stable, positive future for the school, and to minimise any impact to its pupils".
