In the last week, Republicans and their media minions have made all sorts of bizarre accusations against Texas Democratic Senate candidate James Talarico.

Still, the one made by Utah Sen. Mike Lee (R) may be in a class of its own.

That’s saying something, considering Ken Paxton, Talarico’s GOP opponent, accused him of being “low T,” and White House deputy chief of staff Stephen Miller baselessly claimed the Texas Democrat was the party’s first transgender Senate candidate, not to mention the allegation that Talarico may be ― horrors! ― a vegan.

But, yes, Lee topped them all when he responded to an X post by the Democratic Party hyping Talarico up to Texan voters, saying he’s “the only candidate who will put you first.”

Something about the post really fired up Lee, so much so that he responded by suggesting Talarico, a Presbyterian seminarian, worships Moloch, an ancient deity associated with ritual child sacrifice, who some conservative Christians often cite as a rhetorical way to refer to abortion.

Yes. Seriously:

James Talarico will put you first

On the altar to Moloch

HuffPost reached out to Lee’s office for comment on the post, but no one immediately responded.

However, Moloch references do appear to be a particular passion for Lee, who has posted them many times, including here, here, and here.

Not surprisingly, Lee’s post attracted a lot of shock and salty comments, many of which referenced recent comments by Republicans about so-called civility.

Nothing to see here, just a Republican Senator accusing a Democratic Senate candidate of child sacrifice. But, hey, don’t you dare criticize Trump as that could lead to political violence. 🤷🏽♂️ https://t.co/tlQYlnN3b9

"liberals need to stop demonizing their political opponents" https://t.co/vOBmVSatSo

I thought demonizing (literally!) political opponents was bad and incites violence? https://t.co/m3RyxqEa8h

One person suggested that trafficking in religious bigotry isn’t a great look for a Mormon politician like Lee.

If I were the most prominent politician from a small religious minority I would simply not traffic in religious bigotry https://t.co/qxiDlKj32c

Others suggested Lee might be going through some things.

Again, Mike Lee will not be held accountable for these outrageous comments accusing a Democrat of sacrificing people to Satan because he refuses to speak to the press. He's just thoroughly pickled his brain online. https://t.co/HlNcUbYo5S

dude who believes jesus made a post-crucifixion pit stop in Utah to explain to a convicted con artist how to become master of a harem (and eventually the god of an exoplanet) has opinions about christian heresy https://t.co/gXqxt78LYj

Another social media user snarkily hoped Lee’s accusation was legit.

Promise? https://t.co/2izhM1PA4g

An X user, who claimed to be from Texas, noted that the GOP’s attempted takedowns are proof the party is “struggling so hard to nail down an attack on Talarico.”

It's not even the end of the first week and the GOP is struggling so hard to nail down an attack on Talarico. How are y'all going to last until November if y'all are already this far gone? https://t.co/Vtj3Ba8cEt pic.twitter.com/ci2ScDPRES
