Lawrence O'Donnell Chronicles Yet Another 'Desperately Humiliating Day' For Trump

MS NOW host Lawrence O’Donnell said Tuesday marked a “desperately humiliating day” for President Donald Trump, citing a rather pointed speech to Congress from King Charles III and “the goofiest indictment” any administration has ever brought in the United States. “And into that country today stepped the king of England, who played an unprecedented part in another desperately humiliating day for Donald Trump’s Washington,” O’Donnell said Tuesday. “And for once, the king himself was not the humiliated one.” He continued, “No one humiliates Trump lawyers more than Donald Trump, and he could not have done more to humiliate the already humiliated Todd Blanche than he did today by getting the goofiest indictment America has ever seen out of Todd Blanche.” The Justice Department under acting Attorney General Todd Blanche indicted former FBI Director James Comey on Tuesday, accusing him of threatening Trump’s life last year — by posting a photo on social media of seashells forming the numbers “86 47.” “And Donald Trump’s humiliation today was delivered to him by his guest of honor, the king of England, who for the first time in my life made me feel something akin to gratitude to a British monarch and outright awe for his speechwriters,” O’Donnell said Tuesday. He continued, “The speechwriters had the task of telling the truth in a chamber where half of the members applaud and cheer Donald Trump’s pathological lies, and … had those same Republicans applauding sharp criticism and complete disagreement with Donald Trump.” Charles spent much of his speech espousing the virtues of NATO, an alliance Trump has repeatedly attacked and insulted, and calling for continued international support for Ukraine amid Russia’s ongoing invasion — which Trump has previously blamed Ukraine for. “Donald Trump recently said, and these are his exact words, ‘NATO is shameful,’” O’Donnell noted. “His vice president has said, ‘I don’t really care about what happens in Ukraine.’ And the Republican Party in that chamber today rose to their feet to applaud NATO and applaud support for Ukraine.” The MS NOW host appeared genuinely shocked at the Republican reaction, and then joked that they only applauded the speech because it was “delivered in a posh British accent.” O’Donnell went on to mock Trump for fawning over the king’s accent earlier in the day, but not comprehending the content of what Charles told Congress, playing a clip of the monarch extolling the Magna Carta as “the foundation of the principle that executive power is subject to checks and balances” — to even more applause from Republicans. He noted that the king also touched on climate change, which Trump has long dismissed, and seemingly nodded to the survivors of late sex offender Jeffrey Epstein by urging people to “support victims of some of the ills that so tragically exist” in the U.S. and the U.K. The host said a royal aide told Newsweek reporter Jack Royston the Epstein survivors “are naturally incorporated in this line.” “It’s not much,” O’Donnell said Tuesday. “In fact, it is very, very little. It couldn’t be smaller. It’s the smallest and most indirect acknowledgment of the Epstein survivors’ suffering that the speechwriters could have come up with. But it’s something.” He concluded, “It is more than Donald Trump has ever said about them.” Watch the full “Last Word” monologue on MS NOW’s YouTube account.
