May Day is almost here, and protests are planned across the country, including in NYC. Organizations have planned demonstrations throughout the day on May 1. Here's what to know about May Day, and where protests will be taking place in NYC. May Day, which also goes by International Workers’ Day, honors workers and the labor movement's history. Some protests call for no school or work on the day, which falls on a Friday this year. There are multiple demonstrations taking place across the city on Friday, May 1 to honor the holiday. A protest, backed by multiple grassroots organizations including The People's Forum NYC, is taking place in Union Square at 2 p.m. that day, and tells demonstrators: no school, no work, no shopping. "On International Workers’ Day, millions around the world will take the streets. In New York, we’re joining cities and towns across the U.S. to stand together — against war, against deportations, and against Trump’s billionaire agenda stealing our future," the organization posted on Instagram. The demonstration will then move down to Washington Square Park, where protestors will meet up with another rally beginning at 4 p.m. We Will Not Be Silent: May Day Rally & March, hosted by New York City Central Labor Council and others, will meet at Washington Square Park then move its way down to Foley Square.
