(FOX 5/KUSI) β Traffic on the I-805 through central San Diego is delayed due to a semi truck that was destroyed after crashing and catching fire in the southbound lanes on Tuesday. The semi truck crashed into an attenuator, also known as a crash cushion, where a ramp diverts to take traffic onto the I-8, the California Highway Patrol said. See real-time road conditions on the FOX 5/KUSI Live Traffic Map The crash caused the semi truck to be fully engulfed in flames for nearly an hour and to leak diesel and oil into a storm drain, but nearby waterways were not affected, the agency said. The CHP confirmed that the driver of the semi truck died during the crash and fire. San Diego County officials will conduct a toxicology report to determine if drugs or alcohol were a factor in the crash. Images from a news helicopter showed the semi truck and its trailer destroyed, with the cabin completely burned down to the metal. Officials have not determined what could have caused the fire. Only the far left lane of southbound I-805 was reopened about an hour after the crash, letting drivers trickle through the crash site. The CHP said traffic heading south on I-805 from North County toward downtown San Diego should divert to Highway 163. Copyright 2026 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved.
